Sport HistoryCricket Read moreCricket CloseI can’t remember the last time an English one-day team beat the Australians 5-0, but this result has really put England as real favorites for next year’s World Cup and in the process they’ve created their own history and records. Willington School boys have been creating their own history too this season. One of the highlights of this season has to be excellent performance of the 1st and 2nd XI teams against Kings College School Wimbledon and the Colt’s teams against Rokeby Preparatory School. After a very successful season last year, I was really looking forward to this season so that we build on our strong foundations we laid. The boys have persevered and enjoyed every single minute of the cricket season and they should be very proud of their efforts. This year over 200 boys from Year 2-8 have represented Willington in 92 fixtures from U7 to U13 level this season. I am very fortunate to be working at Willington because the boys are absolutely Cricket mad and you can see them getting more interested in the sport. All the age groups have responded brilliantly to the coaching provided this season and they have played with confidence and dedication. Cricket at Willington is constantly evolving and the facilities are improving each year which is one of the reasons why the performances have improved this so much. This summer we had the opportunity to use Raynes Park Sports Ground, which has lovely cricket pitches and straight away this made a difference to the training and match performances. The coaching team as ever has worked extremely hard this year to support each player and help the boys develop their individual skills further. I am very grateful to my coaching team who have planned and implemented a varied and rich coaching programme for the boys this year. I am extremely proud of the boys; they have practiced with enthusiasm and dedication and played an attacking brand of Cricket this year in fixtures.
Reception boys are enthusiastic about all sports but in particular Cricket. I really enjoyed coaching them this season. They had a lot of fun learning how to bowl, bat and field and they particularly enjoyed the continuous cricket game. There is a lot of potential in the reception classes and I cannot wait to coach them again in Year1. Year 1s are making fantastic progress, they have thoroughly enjoyed the Cricket season. Dylan Jones, Henry Mildred and Harry Ford have been impressive this year. Year 2s were outstanding this season, they have made huge amounts of progress and this was evident in their first ever school fixture against Wimbledon Common Preparatory school. Joshua Overend, Zavier Bates, George Whitaker, Micah Waldron and Ishan Bhat have performed consistently throughout the season. Year 2 are starting to show real maturity and they cannot wait to play in fixtures next year. Year 3s have a lot of talent and ability but they have worked hard too. The A team did not lose a single match this term which shows the consistency they played with. Ollie Mortlock, Che Vohora Loyns, James Millard, Leo Hewitt, Harry Johnson, James Smyth, Orson Jones and Fred Robinson are few of the names to watch out for in years to come. Year 4s, I had the pleasure of coaching the Year 4 again this year and we had a lot of fun this season. This age group is not just talented and hardworking but they are lovely boys who play the game in the right spirit. They have enjoyed every training session and as a result, they have made significant improvements individually and in teams. Congratulations to these boys who were selected for Surrey development squads this year. Aaron Bates, Freddie Overend and Kiran Ramaiya. Kai Gee Kee, James Henderson, Isa Hiba-Saibo and Robbie Stapleton, Alex Pappini, Oliver Booth have worked very hard and showed that they are developing into fine cricketers. The Year 5s are a very skilful and hard working group and they absolutely love their cricket. The skill level of some of these players is phenomenal. I have been very impressed with the strength and depth in this age group. Players who have shown a lot of potential and impressed this year are Reuben Parish, Ravi-Vohora–Loyns Jack Lalor, and Luca Hammond. Harry Hammond, Freddie Johnson, Isaac Robinson and Roshan Ramaiya are making outstanding progress. These boys from Year 5 have continued their fantastic experience with Surrey county cricket club and performed brilliantly for school and county this season. Congratulations boys! Year 6 / Colts have enjoyed another successful season this year. They lost only two games and showed a lot of promise. Jack Mortlock, Benedict Hunter have also represented the 1st XI at Willington and showed that they are ready for this level. Huge congratulations to these two who continue to impress in the Surrey County Performance set up. Harry Overend performed very well and represented the 1st XI. Toby Fry, George Johnson and Samuel Redwood have contributed all season for the Colts A-team and should be commended on their efforts. Maxim Dytchtchenko and David Hemphill both performed consistently playing for the Colts B team. 1st XI have enjoyed a very successful season losing one game against Rokeby. The development of this team has been the most pleasing part for me this year. They started the season against Tower House and played very well but ended up with a tied game. They played very well against a very strong Rokeby side and had them on the ropes but ended up on the losing side. Since then they have not lost a game. They have worked hard in training and as a result, they have achieved consistent results this season. Gabriel Hammond, Joshua Vergunst have carried the batting honors this season. Jazib Ahmed, Dinel Denipitiya formed a formidable and skillful opening bowling partnership and they have taken wickets in every game. Sam Gale and Zeeshan Chughtai are skillful spin bowlers who are developing all the time. 2nd XI – Daniyal Ali, Geno Bonning-Pitorri have enjoyed successful seasons for the second XI this year. Well done boys. 3rd XI – Cameron Omonua and Logan Herries have captained this team diligently and led from the front. We had some excellent performances and won so many close games. All the boys who represented this team did so with a real sense of fun and enjoyment. These boys stood out during the season, Ryan Patnaik, Jacob Potter, Chris Roberts and Danish Jamal performed solidly throughout. 4th XI – Daniel Tretyakov, Stefan Marcetic and William Knighton played really well throughout the season and we too won a lot of close games. Skills improved and by our last game, we had players choosing fielding positions and the batting/bowling order. Well done this year. This year we enjoyed a full packed schedule and our final fixtures took place on 22nd of June. I am very proud of the Willington boys who have not just played with great attitude, commitment and enthusiasm but the dedication they have shown this season has been particularly amazing. I always believe that team spirit is the key for any team to be performing at the top of their game. Willington boys do bring this spirit to every session and fixture. Cricket is a team sport but it does provide opportunities for individual players to shine and perform in a team environment, which brings the element of responsibility for each and every player in the team. This is where I have been very impressed with the Willington boys; they are now starting to take ownership of their own learning and setting goals for themselves. I am hugely grateful to the Willington Cricket community who as ever have been very supportive and the Willington Sports Department who have worked tirelessly to make sure boys enjoy the Cricket programme.
